Imagination Exercise #1

Writing prompt: You made a promise to yourself you'd finally do it on the first day of spring. Today was the day.

Three months in to the pandemic, spring was peeking through the melting snowbanks and the budding trees. The first thunderstorm of the season shook the house, and she began to think about her New Year's resolutions. The first few months of the year were intended to be prep time (memorizing monologues, updating her book, getting to dance classes), and she had made a promise to herself to get an audition by the first true day of spring. The reality of the world made any in-person auditions impossible, so she would have to get creative.

The months of isolation made even the smallest tasks seem both incredibly imtimidating and potentially pointless. Why prepare for an audition when internationally, there is literally no more theatre. Online monologues and talk shows, Instagram musical performances, BroadwayHD streaming online...and that's it. Her anxiety prodded her even further - what if we are never in a place where live theatre, her favorite thing in the world to experience, is ever safe again?

This is usually the point in her thinking where she distracts herself with pointless television, her 10th puzzle of the week, or a nice strong cocktail. None of which help her with the promise she made to herself.

The key, she thought, is probably to stop thinking about myself. These anxious thoughts do little to help me and nothing to help the world.

She made a promise that she would create. This year can't look like she thought it would on New Year's Day. Instead, she has the opportunity to create something completely new. To reinvent herself and her goals and what she contributes to the world. Today is the day.
